و زني که کودکي در آغوش داشت گفت: «از فرزندان بگو» و او گفت: «فرزندان شما، فرزندان شما نيستند. آنان پسران و دختران زندگی شوق‌انگيز خویش‌اند. توسط شما می‌آیند، ولي نه از شمایند. با شمايند، اما از آن شما نیستند. مي‌توانيد بدانان مهر خود را بدهید، اما اندیشه‌هایتان را نه، چون آنان اندیشه‌های خود را دارند. مي‌توانيد به جسم آنان پناه دهيد، ولي به روح آنان نه، چون روح آنان ساکن خانه‌ي فرداست، خانه‌اي که شما نمي‌توانيد آن را ببينيد، حتي در خواب. می‌توانید بکوشيد مانند آنان باشيد، ولي سعي نکنيد آنان را مانند خود کنيد. چون زندگي به عقب باز نمي‌گردد و در ديروز درنگ نمي‌کند. شما کمانی را می‌مانید که فرزندتان را همچون تیرهایی زنده از چله‌ی آن به جلو پرتاب می‌کنید. کمانگیر است که هدف را در گذرگاه بي‌پايان می‌بیند و با نیروی خود شما را خم می کند تا تیرهای او تیز و دورپرواز به پيش روند. بگذارید که خمش شما در دست کمانگیر شادمانه باشد. او عاشق تیری است که می پرد، پس به کمانی که بر جای می‌ماند نیز عشق می ورزد». جبران خلیل جبران
